Oil Analysis

We offer oil analysis services as an addition to any of our surveys. Oil analysis can be an essential diagnostic tool for evaluating the health of your vessel’s machinery, such as engines, generators, transmissions, and hydraulic systems. This non-destructive process involves collecting a small oil sample that is then sent to an independent lab for analysis; a comprehensive report will follow.​​

A properly collected sample can offer a detailed picture of the internal condition of your equipment, enabling you to monitor its current state and establish a baseline for future assessments. By identifying potential issues early, oil analysis helps you take proactive measures to maintain the machinery's long-term performance and reliability, ensuring smooth operations and peace of mind.
Here is a breakdown of what the oil analysis includes:

Spectral Exam:

Looks for nine (9) different wear and contaminant metals to help reveal abnormal wear in pistons, cylinders, bushings/bearings, crankshaft, valve train, gears, clutches, and more.

Viscosity Exam:

Measures the thickness of the oil to assess whether the viscosity falls within the proper range, given the subject oil type is known. For example, fuel dilution can thin the oil, whereas coolant & soot can thicken the oil.

Oxidation Exam:

Evaluates the breakdown of the oil, the loss of its lubricity, and serviceability.

Soot Exam (Diesel Engines Only):
-
Soot is a natural byproduct of diesel combustion. Excess soot can increase the oil viscosity, leave deposits on wearing components, or, in serious cases, clog filters and passages. Excess soot can be an indication of improper air/fuel ratios, defective air intakes, faulty injectors, or even blow-by.

Nitration Exam (Gasoline Engines Only):

Analyzes byproducts that are formed during the combustion process, which can be corrosive and lead to accelerated oil deterioration.

Total Base Number (TBN):
-
A byproduct of the combustion process is the creation of acids. The TBN exam measures the amount of alkaline base reserves your oil has remaining. The base reserves are contained within the oil's additive package and are used against the acids. This exam is a helpful indication of an oil change being needed.

Other Tests:

The oil is also examined for water, fuel dilution, and glycol (anti-freeze).​
